Journey & Healing: Trauma in Immigrant Communities
March 31, 2021 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Immigration is a difficult journey with several obstacles and experiences along the way. With these experiences, a prevalent number of common traumatic events are faced when immigrating and even after immigration. Join Northeast Iowa Peace & Justice Center for a webinar discussing the injustices and traumas faced in immigrant communities. The intention of this program is to raise awareness and start a conversation, opening avenues for ideas on ways to better support trauma-facing communities.
Three expert panelists, Dr. Adeyinka M. Akinsulure-Smith, PhD, ABPP, from The City University of New York, Jean Steve Parfait Mfuranzima, MPA, from Grand Canyon University, and Nisha Kurup, LSW, from the Intercultural Mutual Assistance Associationwill bring different and vast perspectives to the discussion.
These panelists have worked with several different types of immigrants and recognize the differences in trauma that come with being any immigrant. Moderated by Professor Susan Schmidt of Luther College, the panelists will provide experience in areas of victim services, academic and psychological research, as well as personal experiences of going through the immigration process.
