Seeing Decorah Through New Eyes: A Myanmar Person’s Perspective

August 22, 2022 @ 6:30 pm 7:30 pm

Eric (Min San Thu) is a recent Luther College graduate from Myanmar who experienced being singled out and harassed as a person of color 2 years ago in Decorah. Eric’s presentation aims to highlight his experience of racism and give an idea of the challenges international students face while studying abroad.  He will share his thoughts on living in Decorah, celebrate diversity in Decorah, and help people have an improved understanding of the hardships international students have to overcome in the United States.

Eric’s experience as a student abroad is also one interconnected with his homeland of Myanmar, a country deep in upheaval due to a violent coup by its corrupt military.  Eric will share his experience of virtually protesting for his country, while studying and interning off-campus. He will describe his struggle with mental health as he constantly worries for his family’s safety in the midst of heavy academic demand. Conclusively, he will highlight Decorah’s impact during his time of difficulty, and what he looks forward to in the future for his country.
